PEDESTRIAN HEAD PROTECTION DURING CAR TO PEDESTRIANACCIDENTS: IN THE EVENT OF PRIMARY IMPACT WITH VEHICLEAND SECONDARY IMPACT WITH GROUNDbyVISHAL GUPTAMay 2014Advisor: Dr. King H. In particular, the level of protection is assessedusing a free-motion headform impacting the vehicle’s hood at a fixed angle. As such, this test setup does not capture the effect due to the vehicle front-end profile, nor does itcomprehend injury due to a possible secondary impact of the pedestrian’s head withground. This thesis aims to numerically simulate vehicle to pedestrian crashes todevelop knowledge that may suggest ways to improve safety above and beyond theregulatory tests. Inputs to the simulations include the vehicle front-end profile, impactspeed, and pedestrian size. Outputs include the angle of primary head impact to thehood, the extent of head injury (HIC), and whether or not there is a secondary head impact with the ground. One key finding is that head impact angles, and hence head injury measures, varygreatly due to changes in vehicle front-end profile. This suggests that the current test

Effect of vehicle front end profiles leading to pedestrian secondary head impact to ground.

Most studies of pedestrian injuries focus on reducing traumatic injuries due to the primary impact between the vehicle and the pedestrian. However, based on the Pedestrian Crash Data Study (PCDS), some researchers concluded that one of the leading causes of head injury for pedestrian crashes can be attributed to the secondary impact, defined as the impact of the pedestrian with the ground after...

An Assessment of the Impact of Pedestrian Refuge Islands on Vehicle Speed Changes and Pedestrian Safety: Case Study in Tehran

Pedestrians are among the most vulnerable road users. Speed of vehicles is considered as one of the major causes of danger for pedestrians crossing the street. Therefore, it is of utmost importance to devise suitable solutions to reduce speed of vehicles. One of these solutions is installation of Pedestrian Refuge Islands (PRI) in very wide midblocks. With regard to fluctuations in pedestrian a...

right). Pedestrian accidents represent the second-largest source of traffic-related injuries and fatalities, after accidents involving car passengers. Children are especially at risk (see Figure 1). This problem’s magnitude has caught legislators’ attention. The EU, for example, is studying proposals for legislating maximum-tolerated impact coefficients for a vehicle hitting a child or adult pe...

Crash Injury Analysis of Knee Joint Considering Pedestrian Safety

Background: Lower extremity injuries are frequently observed in car-to-pedestrian accidents and due to the bumper height of most cars, knee joint is one of the most damaged body parts in car-to-pedestrian collisions. Objective: The aim of this paper is first to provide an accurate Finite Element model of the knee joint and second to investigate lower limb impact biomechanics in car-to-pede...

Analysis of 121 fatal passenger car-adult pedestrian accidents in China.

To study the characteristics of fatal vehicle-pedestrian accidents in China,a team was established and passenger car-pedestrian crash cases occurring between 2006 and 2011 in Beijing and Chongqing, China were collected. A total of 121 fatal passenger car-adult pedestrian collisions were sampled and analyzed. The pedestrian injuries were scored according to Abbreviated Injury Scale (AIS) and Inj...
